How to Compress a PDF for Visa Applications

Visa and immigration portals often set strict upload requirements. Always follow the exact rules shown by the receiving portal for file type, size, page count and document clarity.

Read the portal requirement first

Before compressing, note the maximum file size and accepted file type shown by the visa portal. Do not rely on generic advice if the portal gives a specific limit.

Keep documents readable

Names, passport numbers, dates, stamps and signatures must remain clear. If a smaller file makes text blurry, choose a larger target or improve the source scan.

Use sensible target sizes

Try 1MB or 2MB when allowed. Use 500KB, 200KB or 100KB only when the application system requires a stricter limit.

Check the final PDF

Open the compressed PDF, zoom in on small text, confirm every page is present and make sure the file name still matches the document you are uploading.

Common questions

Can I use one rule for every visa portal?

No. Requirements differ by country, portal and document type. Follow the receiving portal’s exact instructions.

What if compression makes my document unreadable?

Do not submit an unreadable document. Rescan at a more suitable resolution, remove unnecessary pages, or use the largest accepted target size.
